Zombies on the Brain

Ever notice the more you think about something, the more you encounter that thing? Examples: On a road trip when your kids play Punch-Buggy, a game where fists connect with shoulders upon spotting a Volkswagen, suddenly VWs are in the lanes next to you. Or parked along the street. Or waiting at stop signs.
They seem to be everywhere!
The same phenomenon is happening to me.
In January, I finished a novel that featured a zombie heroine. But it didn't stop there. This spring I find I have zombies on the brain. They're everywhere. In libraries my eyes alight on zombie books. My fellow staff members mention zombies in their diner blogs and my son picks zombie flicks for our family movie night.
Well, at least I’m not alone in this fascination for the walking dead.
Believe it or not, there are lots of movies featuring shambling, animated corpses. Wikipedia lists almost 500. My list of zombie movies is shorter.

For other undead fans, I offer 13 favorites.

1. Plan Nine from Other Space
2. White Zombie
3. Land of the Dead
4. Fido
5. Day of the Dead
6. Dawn of the Dead

7. Shawn of the Dead
8. Night of the Living Dead
9. Brain Dead

10. Zombieland
11. The Crazies
12. Resident Evil (Afterlife, Apocalypse, Degeneration, and Extinction)
13. I Am Legend, or its previous incarnations, Omega Man and The Last Man on Earth.

What about you? Are you a fan of zombie stories? Do you have a recommendation? Or are you encountering something over and over again this season? What? Please share.

  1. I am noticing a definite theme this week, someone else posted about vampires, you have zombies, and I still don't know whoe trevor is but somehow I think it is all connected.
Is this because it is spring? Because I am pretty sure it is not a full moon.

  2. Teaching Money to Kids,
You might be right about there being a connection. I'd like to think "Great Minds Think Alike." Grin.

  3. Zombieland. That's the name I was trying to remember. It looked like it would be fun, but I kept missing my chances to see it. I love silly monster movies.

If you like silly horror, Zombieland is a movie you must see. I get a kick out of the rules for surviving zombie attacks.:)

You're noticing zombie stuff too? It's good to know I'm not alone.

  12. Janet,
Shaun of the Dead is one of my favorites too. I like that during the zombie attack, Shaun has all of these interpersonal/ relationship problems he has to deal with and of course, I enjoy his zany choices.

I can relate to your morning state. My brain is in one of those zombie-like places too. I don't have a name for the phenomenon I've described. Happy TT, anyway.

I know what you mean about the recurring thing though, but right now I can't think of one happening to me.

    Have a great day♥

  19. I liked Zombie movies when I was younger but not so much now. Once we stayed up all night and watched Night of the Living Dead, cult classic and low budget creepy. I still like movies like The Body Snatchers.

  24. Teaching Money to Kids has me laughing out loud! She rocks. (and yes, I'll set her straight about Trevor)

I don't live too far from the cemetery where Night of the Living Dead was filmed. And the one in the mall? My grandfather strolled through a shot. My parents still shop there and there's an annual zombie walk. You should come in for it one year! It looks like a hoot!

  25. Susan,
I'd love to come for one of the zombie walks. Let me know when and where. Hopefully I can make it.

  32. What a fun list! I like many of these flicks and go so far as dreaming of zombie hunting sometimes. Once, I dreamt of being a lucid zombie having experiments performed on me!

  33. It's great that you love vampires and zombies, but i am pretty scared of them! happy weekend!

  34. OMG, you've posted about my favorite, not-so-secret obsession. I'm not going to lie, I squeed out loud when I saw this post. I *love* zombies, probably a little too much. I wrote my master's thesis about zombies. Quite literally, my academic expertise is in zombies.

Shaun of the Dead is my favorite movie. Not just my favorite zombie movie, my favorite movie of all time. Not only is it just plain funny, it says so much about consumer-driven, post-modern society. I love it.

Great, great post. You hit so many highlights of the genre. If there is one missing, though, it has to be Night of the Living Dead. Romero's first film. It's what shapped the genre into what it is today.

Awesome post! Thank you for spreading the zombie love!
