School’s In: 13 Quotes about Education

September is a month of beginnings for me. As a teacher, September’s arrival signals a whole new year, full of promise. To celebrate the start of school, I’ve collected 13 quotes about education, both positive and negative.

Header from samulli

1. “If there were no schools to take the children away from home part of the time, the insane asylums would be filled with mothers.”
-- Edgar W. Howe
2. “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.”
-- Albert Einstein
3. “Learning is finding out what you already know.”
-- Richard Bach
4. “To teach is to learn twice.”
-- Joseph Joubert
5. “It is possible to store the mind with a million facts and still be entirely uneducated.”
-- Alec Bourne
6. “I've never let my school interfere with my education.’
-- Mark Twain
“7. The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.” -- B.B. King
8. “A professor is someone who talks in someone else's sleep.”
-- W.H. Auden
9. “While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about.” -- Angela Schwindt
10. “Labor Day is a glorious holiday because your child will be going back to school the next day. It would have been called Independence Day, but that name was already taken.” -- Bill Dodds
11. “Nothing in education is so astonishing as the amount of ignorance it accumulates in the form of facts.” -- Henry Adams
12. “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”
-- John Dewey
13. “Only the educated are free.” -- Epictetus

As you may have guessed, I like school and enjoy taking classes, but my children remind me that not everyone is as fond of education as I am. What are your thoughts? I’m always happy to read your comments.

    Great post!

That's so true. Even though I don't teach, I have to re-learn so much just to help kids with homework!

  14. I never knew you were a teacher, Brenda. Or maybe I did... but right now, my brain is entirely focused on elementary school; I've spent three days this week (including tonight) up at our local schools, meeting the kids' teachers and hearing about the year ahead of them. I feel like I've got tunnel vision!

  27. #1 made me smile. I bet there are a lot of releived parents. Personally, I used to love school. My Mom was a teacher so we saw both sides of the equation.

  34. Brenda - Thanks for stopping by my TT from last week 13 Ways to Waste time on the internet.

I like #4 a lot because it's true, plus teaching also requires that you keep current on a subject.

I'm also fond of #6 because this can also be true and #1 is just plain simple fact, lol!

Go take a look at my 2 retro school designs: I ♥ School and School Dazed design at The PopArtDiva Gift Gallery - you'll crack up, they show those 2 different opinions about school, lol!

  36. I absolutely loved school, especially high school. I loved the learning although some teachers were pretty indifferent.

Unfortunately I couldn't stay on at school because my mum couldn't afford to keep me there.

However, I did go to uni as an adult...so the education I did get as a child came in handy.

  37. I'm with Anni--you had me at #1. Too true. Even though my youngest just started high school, that last week of summer vacation was driving us both nuts. :)
